Cardinal/International Grooving and Grinding is the recognized world leader in the field of runway grooving. Cardinal traces its grooving roots back to its extensive work with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at Langley Field, Virginia in the late 1960’s. In conjunction with NASA, Cardinal invented the SAFE-T-GROOVER® to eliminate hydroplaning on airport runways. Cardinal currently holds over fifty patents in the grooving and related fields.

Unlike most of our competition, Cardinal’s sole focus is the grooving of airport runways. We are not involved in tangential lines of business like sawing and sealing, slot cutting, bump grinding, rumble strip installation, etc., so when our crews show up to your project you know you are getting the most highly trained and experienced personnel in the industry, not a crew that was slapped together to fill an order. And like our personnel, Cardinal’s equipment reflects our commitment and dedication to being the best in the industry. Unlike most of the underpowered, undersized and antiquated equipment in the market, Cardinal designs and builds all our equipment in house to our exacting specifications. At 600 horsepower and eight feet wide (2.44 meters), our smallest piece of equipment dwarfs the industry standard 165 horsepower and three feet wide machine. All of our equipment have hydraulically driven blade shaft arbors, allowing us to fine tune the blade rpm to the specific type of material being grooved, resulting in sharper, squarer, more uniform cuts than those typically produced by belt driven, single speed arbors. And even though our equipment weighs on the order of 56,000 pounds, due to its unique design it has a lighter pounds-per-square-inch foot print than typical three foot grooving machines. Our biggest piece of equipment, with over nearly 700 horsepower and 1,950 foot-pounds of torque, is capable of grooving a twenty foot wide (6.1 meter) concrete runway panel in only two passes! What does this mean for you the general contractor or airport owner? Cardinal can complete a grooving job faster and more efficiently than any other grooving company and that means less schedule disruption and lower cost to you.

why
The SAFE-T-GROOVER® comes to the end of its pass.  At cutting speeds of up to 45 fpm (13.7 mpm) in favorable asphalt conditions, it doesn’t take long for our groover to complete a pass. To see in action,

In addition, Cardinal is a cutting edge innovator when it comes to returning the runway to its pre-grooving condition in regard to slurry removal. Each machine is equipped with an on board slurry pick up system, and some of our equipment utilize over 100 horsepower in the vacuuming/disposal process. In addition, Cardinal performs a high pressure washdown to ensure the runway is as clean as possible before it is returned to regular airport operations. This means a cleaner, more aesthetically appealing runway, free of FOD and excessive discoloration. Cardinal holds every significant production record in the field of airport grooving on both asphalt and concrete runways. As pioneers in the industry, we know what it takes to get the job done professionally and on time. But don’t take our word for it, check out what some of our customers have to say.
